Frequently Asked Questions

Fasteners & Fixings — FAQ's

Common questions about fasteners, fixings, and their applications

What's the difference between chipboard screws and confirmat screws?

+

Chipboard screws are general-purpose self-tapping screws designed for particleboard, MDF, and timber. They're the standard choice for cabinet backs, shelf fixing, and general joinery work.

Confirmat screws are a larger-diameter, stepped-thread fastener specifically engineered for carcass construction. They require a pre-drilled confirmat hole and deliver significantly higher pull-out strength in edge-to-face board connections — making them the preferred fastener for flat-pack cabinet assembly.

Which screws are best for flat-pack cabinet assembly?

+

Confirmat screws are the trade standard for flat-pack carcass joinery, providing reliable edge-to-face connections in particleboard and MDF.

Connector systems such as Lamello and Striplox are increasingly used for tool-free or low-profile assembly. For back panels, chipboard screws or wafer head screws are typically used depending on rebate depth and board thickness.

What's the difference between self-tapping and self-drilling screws?

+

Self-tapping screws cut their own thread as they're driven into a pre-drilled pilot hole. They're used across timber, plastics, and sheet metal where a hole already exists.

Self-drilling screws have a drill-point tip that eliminates the need for a pilot hole entirely — they drill, tap, and fasten in one operation. They're particularly efficient for fixing into thin sheet metal and aluminium sections, saving time on production and installation.

Do you stock stainless steel fasteners for outdoor or coastal applications?

+

Yes. Lincoln Sentry stocks stainless steel rivets and selected stainless fasteners for applications requiring corrosion resistance — including coastal, high-humidity, and outdoor environments.

For blind rivet applications, both Grade 304 and 316 stainless steel options are available across our rivets range. Grade 316 offers superior resistance to salt and chloride exposure, making it the preferred choice for coastal and marine environments. Contact your local branch to confirm current stock and availability for your specific requirements.

What connector systems do you stock for panel-to-panel joining?

+

Lincoln Sentry stocks a range of panel connector systems including Striplox, Button Fix, Lamello systems, and Pin systems — all available under the Connectors, Fittings & Supports subcategory.

These systems cover tool-free assembly, invisible fixing, and high-strength panel connections for both workshop and on-site use. Lamello's P-System connectors in particular deliver tight tolerances and high mechanical strength, making them a preferred choice for cabinet makers who need a premium fit with fewer errors and less rework.

What anchors should I use for wall-mounting cabinets to plasterboard?

+

For plasterboard fixing, the anchor choice depends on the load being applied. Toggle anchors and cavity wall anchors are suited to lighter loads, while heavier cabinet installations should always be fixed into wall studs where possible.

For masonry walls, masonry plugs and bolts provide reliable, high-load fixing points. Always check the load rating of the anchor against the weight of the cabinet and its contents before specifying. Our full range of masonry and plasterboard anchors covers plugs, bolts, and anchors for a variety of substrate and load requirements.

Can I buy fasteners in bulk quantities for ongoing trade use?

+

Yes. We recommend creating a trade account with us where you will be able to access volume pricing across the range. Opening a trade account also gives you access to Lincoln Sentry's bulk import ordering tool, which allows you to upload a full parts list directly — saving significant time on repeat orders.

Contact your local Lincoln Sentry branch or apply for a trade account online to get started.

What are horseshoe packers used for?

+

Horseshoe packers are used to level and align cabinet carcasses, door frames, window frames, and other joinery during installation. Their U-shaped profile allows them to slide around fixing bolts or screws without needing to be removed.

Available in a range of thicknesses, they can be stacked to achieve precise levelling increments. Durable plastic construction ensures they won't compress or degrade over time, maintaining alignment long after installation is complete. Browse the full packers range on the Lincoln Sentry website.
